Road to the 2012 Final Four in New Orleans

Just over two weeks until Selection Sunday, where teams feel the enjoyment of being one of 68-teams, and the sadness of being the few left looking from the outside. Here again, I will provide you with a few key match-ups over the upcoming weekend to keep your eye on. This weekend leads us into the final week of the Regular Season, and should provide us with some good games. Enjoy...

Friday Night
#10 Marquette Golden Eagles (23-5, 12-3 Big East) vs. W. Virginia Mountaineers (17-11, 7-8 Big East)
9 PM ESPN

What looks to be the final chance for WVU to get that "signature" tournament resume building W, the Mountaineers host the Golden Eagles of Marquette tonight on ESPN @ 9. The Mountaineers are coming off an embarrassing loss @ Notre Dame (71-44) Wednesday Night, in which the Irish outscored WVU in the 2nd half 41 to 16. The Mountaineers are desperate for a big "W" and will face a Marquette team (winners of 11 out of 12 games) still in hunt for a Big East Regular Season Championship. Stars- 4

Saturday
#3 Missouri Tigers (25-3, 12-3 Big 12) vs. #5 Kansas Jayhawks (23-5, 13-2 Big 12)
4 PM CBS

In what we all can call the "Big 12 Championship Game", the Tigers will travel to Kansas with the Big 12 and national tournament seedings on the line. The Tigers used a late 11-0 run in the first meeting back on Feb. 4th to win at home, 74-71 vs. the Jayhawks. With Missouri leaving for the SEC next year, this could be (Big 12 Tournament) the last time these two historical rivals face off against each other on the hardwood. It will be hard to go into Kansas (Phog Allen Fieldhouse) and come out with a "W", how Missouri handles the crowd/stage will be the determining factor in this one. Man, I hope this one is good. Stars- 5

Check out the Duke and UNC games as their face the two ACC Virginia schools (Duke vs. Va Tech, ESPN3 Noon) Stars- 1 (UNC @ Virginia ESPN 4 PM) Stars- 4 as well as the top three schools from the MWC (New Mexico, UNLV, San Diego State) Stars- 1 as they all try and keep pace with each other in their respective conferences.

College Gameday Live from Storrs, CT (ESPN 8 PM)
Game of the Week (ESPN 9 PM)
#2 Syracuse Orange (28-1, 15-1 Big East) vs. Connecticut Huskies (17-10, 7-8 Big East)

Does UCONN have any magic left, to start a run at this season's NCAA Tournament? The defending champs have had a sub-par (and sub coach) for must of the season, especially in Big East play. With the National Spotlight on them Saturday Night at home vs. the #2 team in the nation, this could be a big statement for the Huskies and help get them into the NCAA tourney. The Orange can wrap up the Big East Regular Season Title with a win, who have only dropped one game all season. The Huskies come into this game losing 7 of their past 10 games. Stars- 3

Sunday

#15 Wisconsin Badgers (20-8, 9-6 Big Ten) vs. #9 Ohio State Buckeyes (23-5, 11-4 Big Ten)
4 PM CBS

This game marks the final home game of his career for stand-out (and often criticized) William Buford. Burford's got a chance to be one of the Top 3 or 4 All-Time Scorers at THE Ohio State University. And although, we as fans hate to see him shoot inconsistent, he has what most kids have not done in recent years and that's stayed in school for FOUR years. The Buckeyes could be saying goodbye to some underclassmen as well, as Sophomore's Jared Sullinger and Deshaun Thomas could be playing their final home games on Sunday afternoon (NBA Draft???). I see this one going in the Buckeyes favor, as the Badgers are coming off another defeat to the hands of Iowa, this time out in Iowa City. The Buckeyes need this win to keep pace with the Big Ten leaders, Michigan State. So long, Willy its been a blast!

Enjoy the weekend, and check out some College Basketball, umm, Selection Sunday, I can smell it already...
