Well, despite having to start a third-string QB making his first career NFL start, the Browns didn't completely fall apart in the team's 2012 finale vs. a Steelers team, that looked very disinterested for most of the afternoon. Despite moving the ball at times against the #1 defense in the NFL, the Browns were once again doomed by turnovers (-4 on the day) and costly penalties (9/79 yards). Once again, the Browns finish another frustrating season at 5-11, the third time in four seasons finishing at that mark. #Shurmurfired

 I hope everyone got what they wanted for Christmas. Well, we are in the thick of the bowl season, as starting with today's contests a total of 20 bowl games will be played over the next week. If you got nothing better to do, why don't you just plop down in front of the television and enjoy some entertaining college football games.

 The Cleveland Browns (5-10) finish out the 2012 season on Sunday, in what most likely will be Head Coach Pat Shurmur's final game at the helm. The Browns opponent, the Pittsburgh Steelers (7-8) will provide a stiff challenge for the Browns, who try to finish the season on a high, and win their 6th game of the season, the most since 2007 (10 wins that year).

A big name out in the MLB free agent market this off-season, Nick Swisher is trading Yankee pinstripes for Chief Wahoo. In a surprise turn of events this past week, Swisher tweeted his announcement out to his fans.

Pretty much what I had expected. One of those games you don't even get upset or angry, not even disappointed. What I saw were two teams, one that has plans of heading to the Big EZ in Feburary, and the other...well, the Browns. Yesterday's games was one of those, that was over the minute Peyton Manning took the field. For the majority of the afternoon, Peyton played pitch and catch with his skilled players, as the Browns D was unable to come up with any answers to stop one of the best QB's of this generation. The Broncos continue to dominant the all-time series over the Browns, running their record to 22-5 vs. the Browns. By the way, I'd like to thank whomever from CBS, who thought it would be grand to show flashbacks of the 1986 & 1987 AFC Championship Games. Just what I wanted to get reminded of, as I watched the current Browns squad get blown out, I appreciate that CBS.

As a Clevelander/Browns fan, whenever the current Browns take on the Denver Broncos, I'm sure a number of unforgettable (or maybe forgettable) past memories, creep back into their heads.

In regards to my top 5, here's what I gathered:

Boomer's Diamond/Gridiron Notes: Hamilton goes Hollywood & Two weeks left in the NFL

Josh Hamilton chose the bright lights of LA, to
become "bash brothers" with Albert (Pujols).

Similar to last off-season, when the Angels landed slugger Albert Pujols, they lucked out once again, landing yet another big-time slugger for their already stout line-up. Josh Hamilton joins the Angels, a team who made a number of big slashes all off-season a year ago, ended up finishing 3rd in the AL West, with a record of 89-73. Will the signing of Josh Hamilton be the missing piece in getting them into the MLB playoffs for the first time since 2009. We shall have to wait and see.

Boomer's Game Recap: Browns humbled in loss to Redskins, 38-21

Pssshhh. Talk about your free fall back to reality. Following, a three-game winning streak, there was a nice buzz around the city of Cleveland with the direction the Browns were headed in with the recent success. Then they welcomed to town, a 4th round draft pick, Redskins rookie QB Kirk Cousins, in a substitute role for RG3, and the Browns were handed a 38-21 defeat, in the teams home finale for the 2012 season. The Browns finished the home slate of games at 4-4. Bootleg, after bootleg, after bootleg, Cousins shook off a shaky start to the game, to absolutely dominant the Browns throwing for a team-high 329 passing yards on the season, throwing 2 touchdowns. The Browns led 14-10 at the half, but a Brandon Weeden interception on the Browns opening possession of the 2nd half, set the mood for the rest of the game. The Browns despite the recent success the last few weeks, showed that as they are improving, they are still a ways away from being a week in & week out winner in the NFL. Been a couple weeks since I mentioned this, but #fireshurmur.

Cavs Corner: Quarter Season Mark, What Now?

Okay, so I lied about posting this review after the Indiana game last Wednesday.  Sue me.  I waited an extra two games before telling you the ongoing depressing saga that is the Cleveland Cavaliers.  How are we doing you ask?  Well in the six games since my last visit, the Cavs are a thundering 1-5 which brings their season record to an impressive 5-20.  That's good for the second worst winning percentage in the NBA!  Only the Washington Wizards are worse with only 3 wins but have played 4 less games (how does that even happen in a schedule 20+ games in??).  The Cavs are an even better 0-7 against the Central Division and are currently 9.5 games back of leading it.  Furthermore, they are 8 games back of tying the Celtics for the 8th seed.  What's there to look forward to then?

Not quite like March Madness in college hoops, but the college football bowl season always provides some entertainment over the holiday season. Things to watch for: bunches of unique stadiums/uniforms,  college finale's for a number of high-profile players, and coaches filling in for ones that have ran off to bigger and better ones.

Three-in-a-row! Hey not bad for, oh lets say, "a bunch of pathetic losers". Albeit, coming against a 2-win Kansas City Chiefs team, who were coming off an emotional home win last week over the Carolina Panthers (27-21), following the teams tragic events of teammate Jovon Belcher. The Browns did what they were suppose to do, and they won and won impressively. Since the teams 0-5 start, the Browns find themselves with a chance to finish the season at .500 or close to it, with three weeks to go in the season. As a Browns fan, what more could you ask for, with this youthful squad, who seem to be getting better each and every week out.

I've officially gone from mellow to upset to whatever about the ongoing NHL lockout that is consuming my favorite sport.  I desperately wish I could bring you fascinating news about how many games the Columbus Blue Jackets are losing.  Unfortunately Gary Bettman, Donald Fehr, the owners, and the players all suck huge donkey balls.  So without going on a rant about that, I'm going to bring you other Ohio hockey news in teams you probably didn't know existed.

Remembering Pearl Harbor on this date (December 7th), we have one more collegiate football game to tune into and watch, before bowl season arrives over the Holidays. The Army-Navy Game, tomorrow afternoon at 3PM on CBS.

Cavs Corner: Weeks 4 and 5

Am I bad luck??

Man o man, what a depressing past couple of weeks for the Cavaliers of Cleveland.  It's not like the team is getting blown out, but with injuries to Kyrie Irving AND Dion Waiters, the team has truly lacked any scoring punch.  Since my last visit, the Cavs have gone an impressive 1-7 with their lone victory coming on the road in Atlanta on a last second buzzer beater by Alonzo Gee.

Overall, Cleveland is 4-15 and are only ranked ahead of the Washington Wizards (who they beat opening night!) in the Eastern Conference and tied with the Toronto Raptors.  They are also last in the Central Division but luckily for them, it's BY FAR the weakest division in the entire NBA.  If they were in any other division, they be at least 10 games behind, if not more.  So thank your lucky stars that Chicago and Indiana pace this division hovering one game above .500.

The Browns (4-8) look to continue to turn the corner, as well as have a successful end to the 2012 season, when they take on the Kansas City Chiefs up in Cleveland this weekend. The Browns look for their third-straight win, the longest winning streak, since December 2009 (when the Browns finished the season winning 4 in-a-row).

I don't even know what to talk about or say. It's just been a very disappointing season, in which we weren't really expecting much from the Browns this season, but at the same time this teams record could look a lot better then the 2-8 mark they have at this point. This afternoon's game, a three-point overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys, was the 5th loss decided by 7 points or less this season for the Browns. The other three losses were 10, 14, and 10 points. This teams been in ever single game they have played this season, but just lack the ability to make "winning plays" when it matters down the stretch. I know it sounds like a broken record, but this team doesn't know how to win and until that changes, don't expect many more W's in the near future. #fireshurmur

11-OH! Wow, this season has resurfaced a number of memories from 10 years ago, when the 2002 Buckeye squad narrowly escaped in a number of games to go 14-0, winning the 2002 National Championship. The only difference, this current squad won't have the chance to play for the National Championship this season, due to a number of selfish Seniors from a season ago. The Buckeyes are banned from the postseason this season, but that hasn't kept them from winning every game (up to this point) on the 2012 schedule, and winning the Leaders Division of the Big Ten out-right.

Boomer's Urban Renewal: Avoiding the Upsets in Week 12

two wins, away from playing in the BCS Championship Game.

Each of the four remaining undefeated teams still have a number of goals in front of them, most notability winning this week, with that in mind the theme for the week is avoiding the upset. First, the new #1 team in the land this week, the K-State Wildcats (10-0) led by long-time Head Coach Bill Snyder & Heisman frontrunner QB Colin Klein travel down to Waco, Texas, to take on a Baylor Bears (4-5) squad looking to pull off the upset. The Wildcats come into the game as a 12-point favorite and look to shutdown a Bears offensive attack that ranks 2nd in the nation in passing (368 ypg) and 7th in the nation in offensive scoring (43 ppg). Out in the pacific northwest, the #2 Oregon Ducks (10-0) host the #13 Stanford Cardinal (8-2), in the game of the week (8:00PM EST, ABC). The #3 team in the land, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-0) host the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (5-5), in South Bend, a place the Irish haven't looked very good at, in recent weeks. The last remaining undefeated team in action this week, Ohio State Buckeyes (10-0), are two wins away from perfection in this bowl-banned season, travel up to Madison, WI to take on the Wisconsin Badgers (7-3), who are actually a 2-point favorite. It's looking like another outstanding weekend of CFB, starting live in the early hours of Saturday morning, out west from Eugene, OR for College Gameday Live 10PM on ESPN. Saturday's in the fall, nothing better.

The Cleveland Browns & Dallas Cowboys, as hard as it may seem, use to have themselves a little rivalry from the late 1960's to the mid-1990's. Looking back at the past and previewing the present.

Boomer's Diamond/Gridiron Notes: Marlins Fire Sale 3.0 & Back-up QB's spotlight the NFL

fire sale by the Marlins franchise.

Where have I seen this before? Oh yeah, the Miami Marlins formerly known as the Florida Marlins, came into the 2012 MLB season with a fresh look, a new ballpark, and a number of big-name free agents to boost the roster, as well as the payroll down in South Beach Miami. Fast forward to the present, and following a 69-93 season, last-place finish in the NL East, the Marlins, once again have conducted their own personal fire sale. Like in years past ('98 & '04), following the teams '97 & '03 World Series Championships, the Marlins shipped away a number of core pieces of those championship runs. As of July, once this latest blockbuster trade is complete, that will make 12 MLB players, that the Marlins have traded away. 12! After one fired big-name manager (Ozzie), shipping away a number of the teams free agent signees, and one brand-new ballpark, the Marlins brass has once again fooled the people of South Beach. Things were suppose to be different, but after this weeks trade, the only difference in Miami is that Marlins have different looking uniform's, and a state of the art ballpark, filled with...empty seats (18th in attendance, 2012). In other news around the diamond...

Cavs Corner: Week 2 Round Up

Well, after a promising 2-2 start, the Cavs hit a sort of an injury/sick bug.  Late in the Clippers game last Monday, Tyler Zeller got elbowed in the face inadvertently.  What most thought would be a short term facial contusion as the initial x-rays were negative, turned out to be a fracture AND a concussion.  Zeller has not seen any time since the 4th quarter of that game.  Andy Varejao also got a mystery bruise on his knee and missed the game last Wednesday vs Golden State.  Meanwhile, players like Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters, and CJ Miles all battled stomach viruses but played in each of this past week's games.

So let's recap the four games in week 2!

Boomer's Urban Renewal: Salute to the Veterans in Week 11

Honoring Veterans all over, with another great
weekend of college football action.

On this weekend, we celebrate Veterans Day (November 11th), by honoring the ones that have went before as, and the ones that are serving and protecting as out there today. Over the weekend, a number of National Anthems will be sung, America flags will be raised, and the stars and stripes will remind us, how special it is, to be able to head out to our favorite tailgate, college stadium, and watch our favorite teams each and every week. All three service academies will be in action this weekend (more on that later), as well as a number of college hoops games tipping-off on either a army base over seas or on a carrier ship off the shores of this great land. When you are out and about this weekend, take a minute to let someone you know, who has serviced this country that you care about what they are doing and thank them for their services. Now, onto the less-important things, the college football action this weekend. Six of the Top 10 teams this weekend travel on the road (including Florida State's 28-22 win over VA. Tech, last night) to take on home underdogs. The biggest task for this weekend, most importantly for the five remaining eligible undefeated teams is, "take care of your business, and move on", because at this stage of the game, you do not want to be slipping up and losing. Boomer Report: Perfection down to a two-game season for the Buckeyes

A stretch of 10 perfect, and at times imperfect games, THE Ohio State University football team has itself sporting a 10-0 record and ranked #5 in the latest AP poll. The Buckeyes, who are off this week (the rare Week 11 Bye Week, haha), have their perfect season boiling down to a two-game run in the next couple of weeks. It's been a fun ride watching this team come together in this bowl-ban season, after what they had to go though a season ago. Now, lets glance back at how the Buckeyes got to this point and look ahead to the Scarlet & Gray's final two games of the 2012 campaign. #Miller2NYC

Five Adjustments the Cleveland Browns must make during the Bye Week

The Cleveland Browns (2-7) hit the Bye Week this weekend, and as there wasn't much of an expectation for this Browns squad this season, they have had plenty of chances to archive a better record, to this point of the season. However, the Browns have been unable to make a number of "winning plays", they haven't won on the road yet this season (0-4), and have won just one out of four games vs. their AFC North rivals. Let us take a look back at the Browns first nine games, and peak ahead at the remaining seven games of the 2012 campaign. Changes are coming with this organization, unfortunately, later rather then sooner.

On Election Day, being the outstanding sports blogger as I am, I thought I would cast my vote on the postseason awards for the Major League Baseball season that concluded a week ago, with the SF Giants sweeping the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. Some close races, the closes one coming from the AL MVP, in which you have Mike Trout, LA Angels rookie phenom who did a little bit of everything this season with his bat & glove in the outfield. The other candidate, Miguel Cabrera, won the AL Triple Crown, becoming the first Triple Crown winner since Carl Yastrezemski in 1967. He also was apart of the Detroit Tigers team to win the AL Central division and a appearance in the World Series, following the Tigers sweep over the NY Yankees in the ALCS. Other close races, include both leagues Cy Young awards, as there were a number of outstanding pitching performances this season. The 2012 NFL season has reached the mid-season point, and it has been a wild one so far. With the replacement referees starting out the season with their attempt to officiate a football game, to Peyton's comeback tour out in Denver, it's been a fun season so far. The Atlanta Falcons are 8-0, yet, the Packers, Bears, Giants, 49ers, and even the Eagles & Cowboys are getting more attention so far in the NFC. The AFC has the 7-1 Houston Texans leading the way, but after that it's a wide-open race for the rest of the contenders. Some teams haven't lived up to the hype, while others are off to surprising starts. With Thanksgiving just a few short weeks away, I'm here, to give my mid-season awards out to some of the guys that have had outstanding seasons so far. NFL Power Rankings: Week 10

It's frustrating to watch the Browns settle for not one, not two, not three, but FIVE FG's in their 10-point loss to the Baltimore Ravens (6-2) this afternoon. The lose is the 10th straight against the Ravens. The Browns had great field position all afternoon, and had a number of solid plays, but were unable to find the end zone, despite getting into the Ravens redone FIVE TIMES. Phil Dawson, who might be at the tail end of a potential Hall of Fame career (at least in terms of the Browns franchise, haha), has been the Browns offense the past 14 seasons. The professional kicker, with his five FG's on the day, has made 23 consecutive field goals. Again, another winnable game into the 4th quarter, this youthful Browns squad continues to struggle to find ways to close out games "WINNING PLAYS". The Browns (2-7) now are on their bye week, and then travel down to Dallas, to face the Cowboys in two weeks. Hang in there Browns fans, someday, it might not be as bad to be a fan of this organization, ha. #FIRESHURMUR

Finally, a game that you won't biting your finger nails in the 4th quarter. Despite another slow start (which we have come accustomed to see this season) Ohio State rolled up 567 total yards of offense and thumped Illinois, 52-22. For the fourth time this season the Buckeyes went over the 50-point mark, as QB Braxton Miller had another stellar performance, in getting the Buckeyes to 10-0, their best start since 2007. Now, the Buckeyes head into their Bye Week, facing what most people predicted back during preseason camp, a two-game season. The Buckeyes travel up to Madison, WI on the 17th to face the Badgers, then will face their arch rivals from that school up north, the Saturday following Thanksgiving. It's been a wild 2012 season up to this point, and would be great to finish it off with a perfect 12-0 mark, as we all start to wonder, what it would have been like, if they were bowl eligible. O-H-I-O!

LSU & Alabama will have their rubber match on Saturday
when these two teams meet for the 3rd time in a year.

Miami (FL) beating Virginia Tech, 30-12 last night on the ESPN Thursday Night game, opened up the weekend, most of us had circled all the way back in August (for LSU fans it was probably mid-January, haha). November 3rd, 2012. #5 LSU hosting #1 Alabama in Baton Rouge, their third meeting between each other in the past year (8:00, CBS). The two teams played twice last season, both snoozers, with LSU winning the regular season meeting, 9-6, while Bama grabbed the crystal ball from LSU in the National Championship, 21-0. The rubber match, again will have National Championship/SEC Championship implications. For Bama, this is their 1st true test of the season, especially facing a ridiculously atmosphere, while LSU will be right back into the National Championship picture, after their lone lose back in October to Florida (14-6). If this match up wasn't enough for your Saturday evening, there is a PAC-12 clash & Big XII game, that showcase four high-powered offenses. Oregon travels down to LA, to face USC, which could be the first of two meeting this season for the two teams. While Heisman front-runner, Colin Klein and his K-State Wildcats host Oklahoma State, a game that should feature a lot of scoring (last seasons meeting: OK State 52 K State 45). Alabama, Oregon, and K State (all undefeated) are all favored by at least eight-points in these three games, that highlight this epic Saturday slate of College Football action. College Gameday is Live from Baton Rouge, LA starting at 10am on ESPN. November 3rd, and my reaction to the epicness of Saturday's slate of games.

Boomer Report: Coaching search, & Browns preparing for Ravens

Can the Browns in some way, land Andy Reid to
become their next Head Coach?

Barring a miracle, following this 2012 season, the Cleveland Browns will once again be searching for a new Head Coach. Since their return to the league in 1999, the Browns have had five Head Coaches (six, if you include Terry Robiskie, 6-game intern stint). With current Head Coach, Pat Shurmur recording a 6-18 record the past season +, it looks like he will be heading out the door, as new owner Jimmy Haslam III will certainly want to bring in his own guy. The Browns haven't had a legitimate Head Coach since the Ronald Reagan administration. Marty Schottenheimer was the Browns coach from '84-'88, posting a winning record of 44-27, with three divisional titles and appearing in three AFC Championship Games (dam you John Elway!). With the impending coaching search that will happen this off-season, the Browns will try again to find the guy that will be able to finally turn this ship around and get the Browns winning and contending again, like the 1980's. When teams in your own division seem to find the right guys, its frustrating as a Browns fan, to watch them cycle in & out a new Head Coach every 2-3 years.
