Boomer's Diamond/Gridiron Notes: MLB Free Agents & Week 17 in the NFL

The Cleveland Indians received an early Xmas present,
with the signing of 1B/OF Nick Swisher.
A big name out in the MLB free agent market this off-season, Nick Swisher is trading Yankee pinstripes for Chief Wahoo. In a surprise turn of events this past week, Swisher tweeted his announcement out to his fans.

Rumored to be headed to a contender or two, Swisher chose the money and the opportunity to play for the Indians in the state of Ohio, where he played amateur baseball at THE Ohio State University. We'll see if Swisher can be of any help to the Indians, who went 68-94 this past season. The perfect fit for both Swisher & the Tribe.

NFL Power Rankings: Week 17

Week 17 playoff scenarios

Games to keep an eye on in Week 17: Complete Week 17 Schedule

Baltimore at Cincinnati, The Ravens clinched the AFC North last week with their win over the Giants. A win in Week 17 would give them the season sweep over the Bengals and with a NE Patriots loss, the Ravens would jump up to the 3rd seed in the AFC playoffs. A Bengals win would give them 10-wins & some confidence heading into the playoffs, the first-time in franchise history that they made the playoffs in consecutive non-strike years.

Chicago at Detroit, The Bears need a win in the Motor City & a Vikings loss to make it into the NFC playoffs, after struggling down the stretch following their 7-1 start to the season. The Lions play spoiler in Week 17, have been one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL (4-11, 7-game losing streak), after winning 10 games last season and making the playoffs.

Houston at Indianapolis, Houston needs a win to clinch the top-spot in the AFC playoff seedings, as a lose to the Colts could potentially cost them a first-round bye. While the Colts get their Head Coach back "CHUCKSTRONG", and can win their 11th game of the season heading into the AFC playoffs (Colts finished 2-14 a season ago).

Philadelphia at NY Giants, The Eagles play the defending Super Bowl Champs in what probably will be HC Andy Reid's final game with the franchise he has coached for over the past decade. While the Giants with a win can hold onto their slim playoff hopes, as they would also need losses by the Cowboys, Vikings, and Bears to have a chance to defend their title.

Green Bay at Minnesota, The Packers can clinch a first-round bye with a win, winners of their last 9 out of 10, since the team's 2-3 start. The Vikings are in with a win OR losses from the Giants, Cowboys, and Bears, could see some history made as RB Adrian Peterson needs just 102 rushing yards for 2,000 on the season, AND 207 vs. the Packers to set the all-time single season mark for rushing yards.

Dallas at Washington, Again, for the second-straight season, the final SNF game of the year, the NFC East crown will be on the line. The Cowboys with a win will clinch the division for the 1st time since 2009, the last time they were in the playoffs. The Redskins, riding a 6-game winnings streak can win the NFC East for the first time since 1999 with a win and will sweep the Cowboys this season (Redskins beat the Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day, 38-31).
