Boomer's Weekly Basketball Full-Court Press

As the College Basketball season heads towards March, some teams are looking to make a Final Four run, while others have some questions to be answered quick, before its too late. The NBA season has reached the halfway point with the All-Star Weekend down in Orlando, FL this upcoming weekend Feb. 24-26. Now lets rant and rave a little about the Buckeyes and Cavs hoopsters.

#9 Ohio State Buckeyes 22-5 (10-4 in Big Ten)

Disappointment would be the word best to describe this past weekend’s game up north. Poor-shooting (38% FG), inability to hit 3’s (3-16) and at times lapse’s on the defensive end cost the Buckeyes another game on the road, losing to Michigan, 56 to 51. Now, that’s two L’s in the past 3 games this week and has some folks in Columbus questioning how good this team really is. Some are even going as far saying they won’t even make it out of the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament this year. Now, I know this team on paper is much better then they have shown in the past two L’s (vs. Michigan St. and @ Michigan) but games are not played on paper. This team continues to chuck up 3-pt. shots and the majority of those don’t seem to be finding the bottom of the net. It was enjoyable to watch them @ Minnesota last Tuesday (W 78 to 68), in which at one point they scored 20 unanswered points. However, Saturday Night rolled around, and on the National Spotlight Stage, the Buckeyes came up short. This team has 4 remaining regular season games left on their schedule and winning out would at least win them a share of the Big Ten Championship in the Regular Season. With that said, is this team capable of winning 4 in a row down the stretch, sure, but will they? Only time will tell. The Buckeyes host (Tonight ESPN 7 PM EST) Illinois a team that has lost 8 out of their last 9 games and then have their home finale Sunday afternoon (CBS 4 PM EST) vs. Wisconsin Badgers. Lets hang in there, Buckeye fans and keep those “Big Easy” hopes alive.

Cleveland Cavaliers 12-17 9th in the East (2 GB of 7th and 8th)

With a record like that, you don’t imagine a team in the playoff race. Well, it is the Eastern Conference in the NBA and with this shorten (66-game season), the Cavs continue to hang in there and give Cleveland hopes of making the NBA playoffs (HEY! it could happen). This past week the Cavs continue to enjoying playing in front of the home fans playing games 4, 5, 6 of a current 9-game home stand. The Cavs winning 2 out of 3 during this past week continue to get hit with the injury bug, as starting Center Anderson Varejao will be out for a month with a broken wrist. The Cavs beat the Pacers 98 to 87 last Wednesday in an overall excellent team effort by everyone. On Friday Night, however, Public Enemy #1 came to town with his mob squad (Miami Heat) and handed the Cavs a disappointing loss, 111-87. Over the weekend, the Cavs got another thrilling finish by their Rookie PG Kyrie Irving (GW FT’s with 0.4 left in the game) and beat the Kings, 93-92. The Cavs on this shorten week due to the All-Star Break/Weekend, play tonight vs. the Detroit Pistons and then again Wednesday Night vs. the New Orleans Hornets. The Cavs are currently 3-3 during this 9-game home stand. Check out a couple baby Cavs this weekend, as Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson participate in the All-Star festivities. LETS GO CAVS.
